History
The earliest inhabitants of Randolph were the Native American Lenapes, and later Quakers from Europe settled here in 1753. The first iron mine came into existence in 1713, and that industry put Randolph on the map and provided the necessary materials for the weapons used during the Revolutionary War. During the early part of the 20th century, the area's lush woodlands made it a summer vacation haven, with entertainers like Frank Sinatra performing in resort hotels. Professional boxers such as Rocky Marciano and Floyd Patterson trained at the Saltz Hotel (now abandoned).
Parks and Recreation
Randolph is home to some of the most scenic nature and friendly parks in the eastern U.S. The Brundage Park Recreation Complex has multiple courts and fields, as well as jogging trails and a picnic area. Freedom Park has about the same, as well as a skate park and sand volleyball pit. Hedden County Park has hiking trails and a lake for fishing and boating.
Shongum Lake
also has great fishing, as well as a full calendar of social events. The topper may be the simulated beach in Randolph Park, some 43 miles from the Atlantic!
Attractions and Events
Randolph's main attraction may, in fact, be the parks and woodlands, but that's not all. An entertaining evening will be had at Randolph's Community Theater the
Brundage Park Playhouse
. This comfy venue hosts a calendar of both the classic (
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
